This story began as part of a holiday styling feature for Vogue Singapore (read more here). I’m sharing a more in-depth version here for those of you who love that unmistakable Ralph Lauren mood and want to bring it home — into real apartments, condominiums and shophouses, not just film-set townhouses.

The Ralph Lauren aesthetic has always been built on three pillars: exceptional materials, strong, architectural silhouettes, and bold yet timeless colour combinations. His work takes classic design principles and refines them for how we actually live today — comfortable, functional, but quietly dramatic.

Whether in interiors or fashion, the language is the same: sumptuous fabrics, beautifully aged metals, polished timber, and leather with character. Country warmth, elegant refinement and individuality, blended into something you can recognise at first glance.

A Ralph Lauren Christmas at home isn’t about copying a catalogue. It’s about capturing that feeling of “luxe meets lived-in” — a world that’s curated but still deeply human.

The DNA of a Ralph Lauren Christmas

The Ralph Lauren holiday style is defined by a deep, evocative palette paired with tactile materials that invite touch:

  • Colours — oxblood red, forest green, deep royal blue and classic tartan

  • Materials — velvet, wool, leather, aged metal and polished wood

At its core, it’s a marriage of tradition and refinement. By year’s end, the holiday season calls for comfort and a sense of home — and Ralph Lauren has the eye to create that feeling not only physically but psychologically. The aesthetic draws heavily on heritage and craftsmanship, yet it never feels old-fashioned. Instead, it feels timeless, a quality that lingers and resonates so deeply during the festive season.

Many of us already know these materials from our own lives: wooden furniture, leather bags, tartan scarves, wool jumpers, velvet cushions. Ralph Lauren edits, layers and curates them in a way that feels both elevated and familiar. His style is emotionally resonant because it reminds us of comfort, safety and home, whilst still feeling luxurious.

Materials First, “Christmas Décor” Second

To achieve the Ralph Lauren aesthetic, start with what things are made of, not how many festive accessories you can buy. Aim to combine:

  • First-class timber — walnut, mahogany or richly stained oak

  • Sumptuous fabrics — velvet, wool, matte satin

  • Leather — ideally softly worn rather than pristine

  • Metal — in buckles, hardware, lamps, trays and frames

Whenever possible, favour finishes that suggest patina and character. Think aged brass rather than bright chrome, leather that looks lived-in, timber with visible grain and depth.

The “weight” of the Ralph Lauren look comes from superb materials, intense colour combinations and a luxurious, quietly distinctive point of view — not from glitter or excessive shine.

The festive palette follows the same logic: red, green, tartan and rich jewel tones in velvet and non-shiny satin. The overall effect should feel well-balanced and striking, yet clean — never fussy or overloaded.

Atmosphere — What You See, Hear and Smell

Imagine the scene: the soft scent of burning wood (or a woody candle), the subtle rustle of tartan, the glow of warm light reflecting gently off leather and polished timber. This is the atmosphere Ralph Lauren evokes.

You can bring this into your own space with a few layered moves:

  • Swap a couple of ordinary cushions for velvet covers in oxblood red, forest green or deep royal blue.

  • Add a tartan throw to your sofa or armchair.

  • Place a burnished brass or dark wooden tray on the coffee table for candles, pine cones and a few baubles.

  • If you use lamps, consider changing one lampshade to a red, green or tartan fabric for the season.

And, if possible, invest in a good Christmas tree. A real pine tree is ideal for its scent and texture, but a high-quality artificial tree can still look beautiful if styled with discipline: a tight colour story, minimal glitter and a clever mix of matte and satin ornaments instead of high-shine plastics.

East Meets West — Ralph Lauren Christmas with an Asian Twist

One of my favourite interpretations of the Ralph Lauren world is to pair it with Asian heritage pieces. There is a gorgeous tension when Peranakan or Chinese rosewood furniture is contrasted with Ralph Lauren textiles and colours.

Imagine:

  • A rosewood mandarin cabinet dressed with velvet cushions in deep burgundy and forest green

  • Velvet and tartan throws combined with a blue Chinoiserie vase and complementary accents

  • A Peranakan sideboard styled with a brass candlestick, leather-bound books and a crystal bowl of baubles in classic RL hues

These combinations don’t compete; they converse. They create a dialogue between East and West, heritage and modernity, memory and aspiration.

I’ve always believed that genuine innovation in design lies in thoughtful cultural synthesis. When you marry the most intriguing elements of different traditions, you create spaces that feel both deeply personal and globally refined.

High-Impact Styling Moves (Without a Full Redesign)

You don’t need to overhaul your entire home to channel this aesthetic. Dedicate one corner or small zone, and work primarily with pieces you already own.

Velvet Gift Boxes with Substantial Ribbons

Wrap boxes in velvet (blue, red or tartan) and use wide, structured ribbons (at least two inches). Follow Ralph Lauren’s diagonal wrap style across opposite corners. Avoid glitter; focus on balance and colour harmony.

Layered Surfaces with a Sense of Story

Introduce a Moroccan or Turkish rug in shades of red, blue and gold; a deep leather armchair; a substantial brass candlestick; an antique tray; a stack of leather-bound or cloth-bound books. These are not mere decorations — they’re story pieces that suggest a life well lived.

A Lush but Edited Tree Base

Place velvet-wrapped boxes at the base of the tree on a richly coloured rug. Add a nearby chair with a tartan throw and you already have a very Ralph Lauren vignette, even if the rest of the room is simple.

The design ideal is effortless style, anchored by Ralph Lauren’s timeless language: timber, leather, velvet, wool, tartan, metal and warm light, arranged with intention.

Luxe Meets Lived-In — A Quiet Invitation

In many ways, Ralph Lauren’s holiday style encapsulates what I believe about interiors: spaces should be recognisable and comforting, yet quietly elevated. Not a showroom, not a film set, but a place you can genuinely live in, celebrate in, and return to once the guests have gone home.

At Loren Ng Designs, we take the same approach — psychology-led, identity-driven design with a deep respect for materials and heritage. If this quiet-luxury holiday mood resonates with you and you’d like a second pair of eyes on your home — whether to refine a single festive corner, style your dining area, or plan a more significant transformation — you’re always welcome to reach out.

No pressure, no hard sell. Just a thoughtful conversation, practical ideas, and a designer’s perspective to help your space feel a little more like the world you’ve been imagining.
